The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, on Monday [October 6, 2025], reported himself to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service in Accra following an official invitation.

He arrived at the CID headquarters around 9:30 a.m., in line with a directive issued by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, regarding ongoing investigations into Akonta Mining Limited’s operations.

The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, had earlier cautioned that if Bernard Antwi Boasiako failed to honor the CID’s invitation, he would be arrested.

Last Friday, Dr. Ayine announced that charges against Chairman Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining Limited, had been completed and formally signed.

Speaking at President John Dramani Mahama’s engagement with civil society organizations (CSOs) on illegal mining in Accra, Dr. Ayine said:

“The charges against Wontumi and Akonta Mining have been signed. He should be here on Monday. If he doesn’t come by Monday, I will order his arrest, and his charges will be read to him.”

The directive followed ongoing investigations into the company’s mining operations.

The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Deputy Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, confirmed that investigations were in progress and revealed that one other person connected to the company had already been arrested.

She added that Mr. Boasiako had engaged with investigators on several occasions but had delayed recent appearances due to ill health, a claim corroborated by his lawyer.

DCOP Donkor assured the public that the investigations were “actively ongoing” and that the final outcome would be made public once concluded.
