Head coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, has emphasized that selection for the national team will continue to be based purely on merit, performance, and quality — not on whether a player is foreign-based or plays in the local league.

Ghana booked its place at next year’s FIFA World Cup, to be hosted in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, after a 1–0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12.

The win has reignited discussions about player selection, particularly the balance between locally based players and those eligible to switch nationality to represent Ghana.

In an interview with Joy Sports, Coach Addo reaffirmed his commitment to fairness and meritocracy in team selection, saying the national team remains open to every Ghanaian player who proves their worth.

“I don’t think we should be looking at who is local and who is not,” he stated. “What matters is performance. We have to look at the best players who can help the team — wherever they play.”

“We have to focus on performance and identify the best players,” Otto Addo stated. “The higher the overall quality of the group, the more the players challenge and push each other to improve.”

The Black Stars coach underscored that healthy competition and team cohesion will be crucial to Ghana’s success as the team prepares to compete on the global stage.
