Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, together with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially commissioned the Newmont Ahafo North Mine in the Ahafo Region — a major investment expected to spur economic growth and create significant job opportunities.
The commissioning ceremony, held at Afrisipakrom in the Tano North Municipality, brought together government officials, traditional authorities, and community representatives.
In her address, the Vice President described the project as a milestone in Ghana’s mining and industrial development, noting its potential to drive employment and enhance livelihoods. She highlighted that the mine will directly benefit five surrounding communities — Afrisipakrom, Terchire, Yamfo, Susuaho, and Adrobaa — through infrastructure development and social investment initiatives.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang commended the Asantehene and his sub-chiefs for their pivotal role in fostering dialogue and cooperation among stakeholders, which she said was crucial to the mine’s successful establishment.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Boah, urged Newmont to uphold the highest standards of responsible and sustainable mining, assuring that government will ensure strict adherence to environmental and safety regulations.
Newmont Corporation’s CEO, Tom Palmer, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to transparency, sustainability, and community partnership, pledging that the Ahafo North Mine will deliver shared value for Ghana and its host communities.
