The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has contributed GH¢10,000 to aid the medical expenses of 16 individuals injured in a fire incident at Egyiresia near Sekondi. The fire, which took place last Saturday, originated from premix fuel leakages during offloading at the fish-smoking section of the fishing bay. A barrel of premix fuel, rolled through the area, left fuel droplets that ignited upon contact with flames from fish smoking, resulting in the fire that damaged two vehicles and injured 16 people.

Currently, the injured are being treated at Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital and Saint Benedict Hospital in Inchaban. The deceased, identified as Joseph Adom, aged 15, and Justice Dadzie, aged seven, were taken to the hospital but succumbed to their injuries.

Abdul Mumin Issah, the STMA Chief Executive, visited the hospitals last Saturday evening and ordered a GH¢10,000 deposit to help with the victims’ financial burdens.

Three victims were hospitalized at Saint Benedict Hospital with various injuries, while 14 others were treated at Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, including two in critical condition requiring surgery.

Updating on the fire’s cause, the MCE explained that the incident occurred around 5pm on Saturday as fishermen were receiving delivered premix fuel. “I received a call from Sekondi police about a fire outbreak at Egyiresia. Upon arrival, we learned that premix fuel was being offloaded and the fishermen were rolling the barrels to the beach. Unbeknownst to them, there was leakage, and when they reached a point where a woman was smoking fish, the accident occurred. As is known, even the slightest spark can ignite petrol.” The narrative was cut off before completion.
