The Renal Patient Association of Ghana has welcomed the move by the Ministry of Health and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to reopen the renal unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to outpatients.

According to the group, the move has brought its members ‘a big relief’ as they can now go for their dialysis sessions and live their normal lives.

The Renal unit of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, which had been closed for the past six months to outpatients, has reopened its doors to them.

The unit’s closure was due to indebtedness to suppliers of dialysis consumables amounting to over GH¢4 million.

Speaking to Citi News in Accra on Tuesday, the spokesperson of the Association, Kojo Ahenkorah, called on the government to address other issues affecting the renal unit.

“This is the first step, it’s a big relief, and we thank God the unit has been opened. But there is more to it than what we were hoping.”

“It is a step in the right direction. At least we can have our sessions and live our normal lives,” he said.

Mr. Ahenkorah added that the government should consider abolishing taxes on dialysis consumables.
