President-elect John Mahama has promised to commission investigations into the death of some individuals in the just-ended elections.
The United States government has expressed concern over the reported deaths of four individuals during Ghana’s elections.
In a statement released on December 10, 2024, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and urged a comprehensive investigation into the incidents.
According to Mr Mahama, his administration will probe the death if the outgoing government fails to take action.
Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the European Union, he said those found culpable would face the full force of the law.
Mr Mahama also acknowledged the overall success of the election but underscored the need for accountability.
“We are happy about the smooth successful election we had. Unfortunately, there were a few incidents that have marred it – a few deaths. It is our intention to investigate what led to the deaths of those people.
“And if people are culpable, then, they need to pay the price for what they’ve done.
“And so as soon as things settle, I hope that this government will start to investigate those incidents. But if that does not happen, we will do it as soon as we come into office,” he said.
