City authorities have demolished the remains of the China City Mall at Santasi in Kumasi after a devastating fire completely destroyed the facility on Thursday, October 30, 2025.
According to officials, the decision to pull down the structure was taken because it posed a danger to passersby and residents in the area.
Kumasi Metro Coordinator for the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Godwin Dela Lahor, said that authorities will ensure proper procedures are followed before any reconstruction begins.
“What we have to do now is make sure they first clear the land. We will take a critical look at the land, examine the surroundings, and determine whether it is suitable for any kind of structure,” he explained.
Mr. Lahor further urged business owners to take proactive safety measures, including insuring their businesses and providing fire extinguishers at their premises.
“Let us try to guide ourselves and take measures that will protect us and our property. Let’s insure our businesses, and when it comes to fire issues, we advise that everyone should have fire extinguishers,” he advised.
The blaze, which gutted the newly opened shopping facility, destroyed the entire building and goods worth thousands of cedis. Despite efforts by firefighters, the inferno consumed shops that traded in home accessories, electronics, and groceries.
