The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has referred a case involving the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to the Attorney-General’s Department for review and legal advice.
In a letter dated June 27, 2025, and signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Justice Oppong on behalf of the CID Director-General, the Department forwarded a duplicate docket from its Special Investigation Unit (SIU) following an alleged assault incident involving the MP during a public demonstration.
According to the CID report, the altercation occurred on May 5, 2025, during the “Save the Judiciary” protest. A one-minute, 13-second video, captured with the Ghana Police Service watermark, showed a scuffle between demonstrators and officers enforcing a restricted area. Preliminary analysis of the footage reportedly showed Hon. Afenyo-Markin striking G/Cpl. Forson Abel, a police officer stationed at the Tesano District.
G/Cpl. Forson subsequently lodged a complaint at the Tesano Police Station on May 6, alleging assault by the MP. He provided a medical report and witness statements from senior officers — Superintendent Isane Ocansey and ASPs Sulemana-Jallo Abdulalai and Nicholas Mensah — who all corroborated his account.
However, Hon. Afenyo-Markin also filed a counter-complaint the same day, claiming he had been assaulted by G/Cpl. Forson.
The SIU, supported by the Crime Scene Management and Cybercrime Units, conducted an on-site investigation and sought CCTV footage from the Accra International Conference Centre. While video received from the National Security Bureau did not capture the alleged assault, footage from the Police Public Affairs Department was used to caution the MP.
Hon. Afenyo-Markin was released on self-recognizance bail in the presence of an independent witness and issued a police medical form for examination — which, according to the report, he failed to return despite several reminders.
Statements were also taken from Hon. Sammy Awuku and Richard Ahiagbah, who were both present during the confrontation.
The CID has since forwarded the completed docket to the Attorney-General’s Department for further legal advice on the matter.
