Broadcast journalist and political commentator Paul Adom-Otchere has lauded former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the “most impactful politician” of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, highlighting his lifelong commitment to democracy, press freedom, and political mobilization.
Adom-Otchere acknowledged that while Akufo-Addo may have made mistakes during his presidency, his overall contribution to Ghana’s democratic journey remains unparalleled.
“He may have made some mistakes, but after you look at it, I call him the most impactful politician of the Fourth Republic,” he stated. “He was the politician who gave the biggest mobilization, fought the most for press freedom, and defended parliamentary processes at critical moments in our democratic history.”
Adom-Otchere referenced Akufo-Addo’s early political activism and steadfast advocacy for constitutionalism, particularly his resistance to attempts to amend the 1992 Constitution during his tenure as Chair of Parliament’s Subsidiary Legislation Committee.
He further credited the former president with helping shape Ghana’s multiparty democracy and vibrant media space.
According to him, Akufo-Addo’s decisive 2016 election victory — defeating then-President John Mahama by the widest margin in the Fourth Republic — solidified his legacy in the nation’s political history.
“He still holds the record of having won the largest margin as an opposition candidate,” Adom-Otchere noted, adding that Akufo-Addo’s enduring legacy lies in his political resilience and unwavering defense of democratic freedoms.
