Parliament has suspended its proceedings in honor of the late former First Lady and founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who passed away in the early hours of Thursday, October 23, 2025, after a brief illness. She was 76.

Nana Konadu, who served as Ghana’s First Lady from 1982 to 2001 during the tenure of her husband, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was renowned for her lifelong commitment to women’s empowerment and social welfare.

She was instrumental in the passage of the Intestate Succession Law, which protected the inheritance rights of women, and worked tirelessly to promote education and skills development among children and women, especially in rural communities.

Her death has elicited heartfelt tributes from across the political divide, with members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other parties describing her as a visionary leader and a tireless advocate for the underprivileged.

Parliament is expected to reconvene after a brief period of mourning, during which lawmakers are likely to table an official motion in her honor.
