Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and former Deputy Finance Minister, Abena Osei Asare, has dismissed claims that the Akufo-Addo administration mismanaged Ghana’s economy.
In an interview with Channel One TV, Mrs. Osei Asare credited the country’s economic performance under the previous government to sound management, despite global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Responding to criticisms from the Mahama administration, she cited key economic indicators—including inflation and GDP growth—to defend the Akufo-Addo government’s record.
“Every era has its challenges, but in 2022, inflation was 54%, and by the time we left office in 2024, we had reduced it to 23.8%. We inherited a growth rate of 3.6%, but we left it at 5.7%. In 2016, GDP was around 219 billion, and by 2024 it had reached 1 trillion,” she explained.
She added, “For no reason can anybody claim that we inherited a mismanaged economy.”
Mrs. Osei Asare maintained that these figures demonstrate prudent economic management, rejecting suggestions that the economy was in disarray during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure.
