The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has presented $1.2 million hospital equipment to the Mepe Health Centre to cater for the over 20,000 population in the area.
The health centre was built by the Citi FM Foundation and the Chamber of Mines about three months ago, to save lives after the Akosombo and Kpong dams spillages.
The presentation is in fulfilment of the MP’s pledge to provide the necessary equipment to make the facility functional. With the support of SOS International in the US, the MP redeemed his promise with the presentation to mark his 44th birthday.
Equipment
The equipment included a number of dialysis machines, X-rays, adjustable beds and stethoscopes.
The health centre is expected to be upgraded to a full hospital in the coming months, while some of the equipment are to be sent to other health facilities to serve the people.
Economy
Mr Ablakwa said the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government would revive and resuscitate a number of Ghana’s defunct factories to make the 24-hour economy realistic and practical.
This will include reviving the defunct Akosombo Textiles and Aveyime Rice Projects under its 24-hour economy policy, stating that the rejuvenation and re-capitalisation of the two projects will provide employment, hands-on training and an unending market for the goods as well as enhance the value chain process.
The Juapong Textiles Company was established in 1968 to produce and supply grey baft to other textile industries in the country while the Aveyime Rice Factory was to end Ghana’s importation of rice and rake in over $600 million at full production. Unfortunately, the two vibrant projects are on their knees and need capital injection.
Elections
On the December 7, 2024, general election, the MP, who is also the Chairman of Government Assurance Committee of Parliament, said the leadership of the NDC party stood for peace and would do all in its power to ensure that Ghana’s peaceful atmosphere was not destroyed while protecting the sanctity of the 1992 constitution.
“Me, I have nowhere to go. I don’t have foreign accounts; all my accounts are here in Ghana so it makes sense that I protect the peace we have as a country and maintain our status as a beacon of hope for the continent,” he said.
He urged his constituents to vote massively to bring back former president John Dramani Mahama and also ensure that he has parliamentary majority. “We don’t want any hung parliament to frustrate the work of the president that is why we have to vote massively for the president and the MPs,” he said.
Excellent service
The District Director of Health, Michael Kofi Zigah, commended the staff of the health centre for their excellent services which had saved many lives and delivered over 50 babies.
He said some of the equipment needed to be in a higher facility (including the dialysis machines), and would, therefore, be transferred to some upgraded health facilities.
The Mankraloo of Mepe, Korsi Nego VI, expressed appreciation to the MP for his continuous suport and and expressed the hope that he would receive more support in his quest to transform the lives of his constituents.
