Ghanaian songstress Mzbel has spoken out about her pain over the growing problem of cyberbullying and the improper usage of social media.

In a sincere discussion on Accra FM recently, Mzbel revealed that she has personally been a victim of online harassment and has taken legal action against bloggers and media personnel in the past, although she chose to keep these cases private due to their sensitive nature.

“I have sued media people before and taken a couple of people on, but it was not made public. They have learned their lessons and have repented. One is a journalist, and the rest are bloggers,” Mzbel said.

Mzbel expressed concern that social media has become a platform for destructive behaviour, including character sabotage and the spread of misinformation.

She criticised online outlets for their tendency to publish baseless stories, sacrificing journalistic integrity for false information.

The “Awoso Me” hitmkaer advocated for greater online accountability and urged the government to implement stricter legislation to check cyberbullying and promote a safer online environment.

“I feel like a lot of people are taking advantage of social media to do wrong things. We are abusing social media. Irrespective of the calibre of people, netizens will find a way to disrespect someone…Social media has become like a weapon,” she said.

Mzbel’s call adds to the growing concerns of cyberbullying among Ghanaian entertainers. The likes of Efia Odo and actress, Lydia Fortson have been vocal about the phenomenon which undoubtedly is causing lots of emotional damage to victims.
