Diana Hamilton: My Collaboration with Mercy Chinwo Was Led by Purpose, Not Attention
Renowned UK-based Ghanaian gospel singer and multiple award-winner, Diana Hamilton, has clarified that her recent collaboration with Nigerian gospel star Mercy Chinwo was not driven by a quest for exposure or attention.
The 2021 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Artiste of the Year explained that her decision to collaborate with international artists is not about leveraging their popularity but is instead guided by spiritual alignment and a commitment to delivering impactful gospel music.
Speaking to Graphic Showbiz in Accra, Diana Hamilton emphasized that every collaboration she undertakes is based on the song’s purpose and message.
“Every song has its unique purpose and message, and I strongly believe the person I work with must resonate with that purpose. It’s not just about creating music; it’s about touching lives and ministering to people. It’s never about attention or traction.”
She further stressed that selecting the right collaborator is essential in ensuring the song’s authenticity and spiritual impact.
“It’s about finding the right artiste who can genuinely convey the message and emotion behind the lyrics. I want to collaborate with someone who shares my passion for the song’s message and is committed to bringing it to life in a way that inspires and moves others as directed by the Holy Spirit,” she added.
Why Fewer Collaborations with Ghanaian Gospel Artists?
Addressing her relatively limited collaborations with Ghanaian gospel musicians, Diana Hamilton attributed it to logistical challenges, including time constraints and geographical factors, rather than any lack of willingness or ill feelings.
“I would love to collaborate with my Ghanaian colleagues, but I am not always around. I remember recording a song meant to feature someone, but when I sent my part to producer Kaywa, he rejected it because he didn’t like it. I had to travel from the UK to redo it, and when I did, he loved it, and we created a masterpiece,” she recounted.
Diana Hamilton’s collaboration with Mercy Chinwo on The Doing of the Lord has been well received, further strengthening the cross-border bond in gospel music. Her comments reinforce her dedication to creating music that ministers to people rather than focusing on industry trends or external validation.
