The Hwidiem Traditional Council in the Ahafo Region has apologized to President John Dramani Mahama following the attack on the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) by some youth in the community.

Addressing a press conference on behalf of the Paramount Chief, Osuodumgya Barima Apea-Dwaah Boafo II, the Mawerehene, Nana Nsiah Awuah, said the council condemns the actions of the youth and does not in any way endorse the assault on NAIMOS personnel, who are legally mandated to fight illegal mining (galamsey).

He stressed that the traditional council is fully supportive of the government’s efforts to apprehend all individuals responsible for the attack, emphasizing that any interference with the operations of NAIMOS will not be tolerated.

Nana Nsiah Awuah noted that the council had refrained from commenting earlier to allow the President space to take the necessary actions.

Meanwhile, the Adontenhene, Nana Baffour Kyei Anaafi, appealed to the government to release any innocent persons who may have been arrested during the joint military and police swoop that followed the incident.

He added that the traditional council remains committed to assisting security authorities and will notify the Ghana Police Service if any community members linked to the attack are identified.
