Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has declared that Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang possesses the capability to become Ghana’s first female President, describing her as a strong and indisputable candidate.

He expressed confidence in her leadership qualities, noting that “Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is exceptionally qualified and fully prepared to lead the nation.

Mr. Iddrisu made the remarks during the Ghana Teacher Prize ceremony, held at the University of Health and Allied Sciences last Sunday.

Clarification

The Minister of Education, who has been widely speculated as a potential flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), explained that his latest endorsement was meant to clarify comments he made earlier during the Vice-President’s visit to the Ministry of Education.

He noted that during that visit, he had offered prayers for Prof. Opoku-Agyemang and expressed hope that she would one day rise to the highest office of the land.

“There were many who sought to interpret my earlier remarks differently,” Mr. Iddrisu said. “Prof. Jane, I am reminding them that my mother taught me that sometimes silence is golden because silence cannot be misinterpreted. But in this case, I wanted an interpretation — because having a Vice-President naturally implies the potential to become President.”

Recall

During Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s visit to the Ministry of Education on September 24, 2025, Mr. Iddrisu warmly welcomed her, saying, “It is my pride, honour, and grace to welcome you back to the Ministry of Education, this time in an elevated capacity as the first female Vice-President of our Republic.”

He added, “It is my prayer that God grants you long life and good health, so that you may one day be elevated to become Ghana’s first female President. God bless you.”.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang previously served as Minister of Education and became Vice-President following President Mahama victory last year.
