The Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mr. Mohammed Abdul Salam, has reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to partnering with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) to improve healthcare delivery across the country.

He made this assurance when the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on him and the Deputy Director-General, Mr. Eric Yeboah Wadie, on Wednesday, October 22. The meeting explored possible areas of collaboration to support regional and teaching hospitals with essential medical equipment and resources.

Highlighting the pressing challenges within Ghana’s healthcare system, Mrs. Darko-Opoku noted that many hospitals continue to operate under difficult conditions, lacking critical diagnostic and treatment tools such as MRI and CT scan machines, dialysis units, and breast screening facilities.

She explained that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, established under Act 114, has begun a comprehensive needs assessment of all six teaching hospitals and ten regional hospitals across the country. Preliminary findings, she said, reveal severe equipment and infrastructure deficits that must be addressed urgently to ensure effective and equitable healthcare delivery.

Mr. Abdul Salam commended the initiative and pledged the NLA’s support in finding sustainable funding mechanisms to strengthen the healthcare system and improve service delivery nationwide.

“Our health facilities are on their knees, and we can no longer pretend about it. When you visit some of these hospitals, you leave wondering how our healthcare system is surviving. The Government alone cannot carry the burden. We are inviting corporate institutions to partner with us in retooling our hospitals so that together we can make a lasting difference,” she said.

Mrs. Darko-Opoku appealed to the NLA to support specific hospital projects as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, emphasizing that such interventions could have a long-term impact on healthcare delivery across the country.

In response, the Director-General of the NLA, Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, commended the Ghana Medical Trust Fund for its commitment to improving healthcare and assured them of the Authority’s readiness to collaborate. He revealed that the NLA is exploring mechanisms to make regular contributions to the Fund under its CSR framework.

“I believe strongly that if we treat healthcare funding as a shared responsibility, we can achieve great things together. The idea of supporting the Ghana Medical Trust Fund aligns perfectly with our CSR objectives. We could even consider adopting one project at a time and seeing it through to completion,” Mr. Abdul-Salam stated.

He added that partnerships of this nature align with the NLA’s broader mandate of using proceeds from lottery operations to support good causes and enhance the well-being of Ghanaians.

The Deputy Director-General of the NLA, Mr. Eric Yeboah Wadie, also expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, reaffirming the Authority’s commitment to supporting initiatives that positively impact society.

Both institutions share a common vision of contributing to national development and improving the quality of life for Ghanaians. Through this partnership, essential health facilities across the country are expected to receive the much-needed support to provide better care for patients and communities.
