Education Minister-Designate Haruna Iddrisu has announced that first-year tertiary students who have already paid tuition fees will be reimbursed under the government’s proposed free tuition policy.
This initiative is part of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s broader commitment to expanding access to higher education, as promised during the 2024 campaign.
Speaking at his vetting before the Appointments Committee in Parliament on January 20, 2025, the Tamale South MP outlined the funding and implementation plans for the policy.
“The country will require approximately ₵345 million to support students entering tertiary institutions. This is the financial commitment the state must make,” he explained.
To facilitate reimbursements, the allocated funds will be disbursed directly to affected universities. “We intend to provide the necessary funds to the universities to ensure refunds for students who have already paid their fees,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
He also emphasized the flexibility of the policy, allowing parents who wish to continue paying tuition fees to do so. “The beauty of this initiative is that parents who prefer to pay can still do so under this policy introduced by the NDC,” he added.
The free tertiary tuition policy aims to reduce financial burdens on students and families while fostering equitable access to higher education. Mr. Iddrisu reaffirmed his commitment to its successful implementation, pledging to oversee its effective rollout.
