A massive fire has gutted the newly opened China City Mall at Santasi in Kumasi, destroying the entire structure and goods valued at thousands of cedis.
The blaze, which broke out on Thursday, October 30, swept through the commercial complex, leaving behind scenes of devastation and thick plumes of smoke visible from afar.
According to officials from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the cause of the fire is yet to be established. Preliminary reports, however, suggest it may have started from the rear section of the building before spreading rapidly across the facility.
“We received a distress call and dispatched two fire tenders to the scene immediately. Our men have been working tirelessly to contain the blaze,” a GNFS officer declared at the scene.
Despite the swift response, the fire completely consumed the mall, which housed several shops dealing in electronics, home accessories, and groceries.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) confirmed that no casualties had been recorded but said efforts were underway to assess the full extent of the damage.
Eyewitnesses described the inferno as overwhelming.
“It was frightening. Within minutes, the whole place was burning,” a shop attendant recounted.
The mall, opened earlier in 2025, had quickly become a popular shopping destination for residents of Kumasi and nearby communities.
The GNFS has since launched investigations into the incident. The tragedy adds to a growing list of recent fires that have devastated markets and commercial centers across Ghana, renewing concerns about fire safety compliance and emergency preparedness in public facilities.
