Joseph Blankson Adumadzie, an employee of the Electoral Commission (EC), has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to initiate the removal of EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and her deputies, Dr Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey, over alleged misconduct he says threatens the credibility of Ghana’s electoral system.
In a statement issued on Monday, November 24, Mr Adumadzie confirmed that the petition was filed under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which governs the removal of heads of independent constitutional bodies. Although he declined to disclose full details, as required by law, he indicated that the petition outlines 12 counts of stated misbehavior, including allegations of cronyism, abuse of office, and gross incompetence.
According to the statement, these alleged actions have eroded public trust in the EC and pose risks to its integrity and independence. Mr Adumadzie emphasized that his petition is driven by a commitment to uphold the Constitution and promote accountable governance, stressing the need to protect the Commission’s dignity to ensure a credible electoral process.
He called on President Mahama to fulfill his constitutional obligation by referring the petition to the Chief Justice to assess whether a prima facie case exists, in accordance with Article 146.
