The flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has entreated the electorate not to vote for former President John Mahama, whom he claimed plunged the nation into darkness for four years, cancelled nursing and teacher training allowances, gave teachers who taught for three years only three months’ pay and collapsed the National Health Insurance Scheme.
He stressed that since former President Mahama had only four-year mandate to rule the nation, he would not seek their interest as he would not come to them after the expiry of his term, unlike him Dr Bawumia who would come back after four years to seek the renewal of his mandate for four more years.
Dr Bawumia said this when he addressed four different rallies, two at Akyem Oda and one each at Akyem Swedru and Akyem Achiase as part of his Eastern Regional tour last Tuesday.
At Oda, Dr Bawumia addressed various interest groups such as drivers, mechanics, artisans, teachers, nurses, traders, as well as traditional rulers, the Clergy, the Muslim community and students at the Methodist Conference hall in the morning; later in the evening, he addressed a mammoth crowd at the Oda central lorry park.
He also interacted with traders and a section of the population at markets and some principal streets at Oda, Akyem Swedru and Achiase before addressing a cross section of the population at separate rallies at Swedru and Achiase.
Rallies
Dr Bawumia, who was overwhelmed by the heavy turnout, advised the people to translate their massive support into votes on December 7, 2024 to enable him to achieve his ambition of becoming the next President of the republic next year.
He stressed that the upcoming general election was crucial as it would determine whether the country would move forward or retrogress.
He stated that when the NPP was introducing the free Senior High School programme, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) members said it was a scam but they were now claiming ownership of the initiative after its success.
Dr Bawumia stated that under his government, all people with disability would enjoy scholarships to tertiary educational institutions and also receive quota in public sector recruitment in all employment avenues.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Oda, Mr Alexander Akwasi Acquah, who is also a Deputy Minister of Health, described Dr Bawumia as an honest, hardworking and incorruptible leader and urged the electorate to vote massively for him in the upcoming general election to transform the nation.
A Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Abena Osei Asare, also mentioned the rich credentials of Dr Bawumia and appealed to the electorate to vote massively for him to become the next President to continue with digitalisation and economic transformation agenda.
Other speakers at the rallies included the MPs for Akyem Swedru and Achiase, Kennedy Osei-Nyarko and Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, respectively, the immediate past Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem and Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, a former General Secretary of the NPP.
