The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been appointed to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Task Force on the peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.
The appointment, made by the IPU President, recognizes Speaker Bagbin’s integrity, neutrality, and ability to build trust among conflicting parties. He joins seven other distinguished parliamentarians representing the IPU’s six geopolitical groups.
In a letter confirming the appointment, IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong commended Speaker Bagbin’s leadership and diplomatic acumen.
“We are confident that your leadership and experience will enhance the work and impact of the Task Force in supporting diplomatic efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine,” the letter stated.
Established in March 2022 as an ad hoc body, the IPU Task Force serves as a platform for dialogue between Ukrainian and Russian parliamentarians. Since its creation, it has held more than 13 meetings, undertaken a mission to Kyiv and Moscow in July 2022, and convened regular consultations during IPU Assemblies.
As a seasoned peace negotiator, Speaker Bagbin is expected to participate in hearings, meet with Ukrainian and Russian delegations, and engage government leaders from both sides. His inclusion is anticipated to bolster the Task Force’s ongoing efforts to foster dialogue and promote peace.
The appointment also underscores Ghana’s growing contribution to international diplomacy and its commitment to supporting global peace initiatives.
