Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has confirmed that five young people sustained injuries during a stampede at a military recruitment screening exercise at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

In a Facebook post, Dr. Amoakohene expressed deep regret over the incident and assured the public that the injured are receiving full medical attention at no cost to their families.

“I have directed that they receive the best possible medical care and full support to ensure their speedy recovery,” he stated, adding that the government stands in solidarity with the victims and their relatives.

The Minister acknowledged lapses in crowd management during the exercise, describing the incident as unfortunate. “We deeply regret this and remain committed to ensuring that future recruitment and screening exercises are conducted in a safe, orderly, and humane manner,” he said.

The stampede in Kumasi follows a similar tragedy at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra, where six people lost their lives and several others were injured during another phase of the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment drive.

President John Dramani Mahama has since directed the suspension of the ongoing nationwide recruitment exercise pending investigations into the incidents recorded in both Accra and Kumasi.
