A 45-year-old man, Issah Nawutou Baricle, was allegedly shot dead by a police officer on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, while on his way to the market in Gbintri, in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.
The incident reportedly occurred around 11 a.m. at a police checkpoint in Gagbini, along the Gushegu–Gbintri road
Eyewitnesses speaks that the deceased was riding pillion on a motorbike when a confrontation broke out between him and an armed police officer over an alleged bribe demand.
“He was coming with his brother when the police stopped them to extort money,” an eyewitness recounted. “The officer asked for GH¢10, but the man said he only had GH¢5 and pleaded with him, citing the poor road conditions and economic hardship.”
The argument reportedly escalated, leading the officer to draw his weapon. When Mr. Baricle attempted to flee, the officer allegedly pursued and shot him on nearby farmland.
The victim was rushed to the Baptist Medical Center in Nalerigu, where he was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an angry mob reportedly vandalized the police checkpoint, demanding justice for the deceased.
