The Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu constituency in the Central Region, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has been appointed as the new chairman of the board of directors for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). This follows the resignation of Herbert Krapa from the position.

The appointment was confirmed in a letter dated July 16, 2024, signed by Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, and addressed to the Minister of Energy.

“The President of the Republic has nominated Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin (MP), Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central Region, as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (the ‘Company’),” the letter stated. “Kindly take the necessary steps to give effect to the President’s nomination in accordance with the Companies Act 2019 (Act 992) and the Regulations of the Company.”

Mr. Afenyo-Markin succeeds Mr. Krapa, who has been appointed as Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy. Mr. Krapa’s elevation to this ministerial role was approved by Parliament after his nomination by President Akufo-Addo. Previously, Mr. Krapa served as the Deputy Minister for Energy.

Before his new appointment, Mr. Afenyo-Markin chaired the Ghana Road Fund. With his transition to the ECG board, Majority Chief Whip Annor Dompreh will assume the role of board chairman of the Ghana Road Fund. Consequently, Mr. Dompreh will step down from his position on the ECG board, a role that will now be taken over by Deputy Majority Whip in Parliament, Habib Iddrisu.

Mr. Krapa, a lawyer, became ECG board chair on April 9, 2024, while serving as Deputy Minister for Energy. He remained in both roles until his recent resignation.
