Ghanaian singer Adina Thembi has shared a distressing account of her childhood experiences, revealing the hurt and judgment she faced due to her fair skin complexion.

In an interview on Cape Coast-based Property FM, Adina recounted how she was often misunderstood and labelled as “disrespectful” or “bad” simply because of her skin colour.

“Growing up, because I am a fair skin coloured person, when a lot of people see me at first glance, they judge me to be disrespectful just because of my skin colour,” she shared.

She continued, “I’ve had instances where in the area that we reside, people used to tell my mother to keep a close eye on me just because I was looking very fair in complexion.”

She expressed the pain and confusion she felt as a child, saying, “Sometimes when my mother tells me about the complaints she’s getting about me, I used to feel so hurt because to me, I don’t see what I’ve done wrong.”

The ‘Obi Tan Wo’ hitmaker stressed “But just because of the way God has created me, the moment you set your eyes on me, you conclude that I’ll be a very bad girl or disrespectful, and that’s some of the experiences I’ve been through.”
