Security agencies in Bawku have introduced drone technology to aid in capturing the movement of weapons and apprehending gunmen involved in the ongoing violence.

The initiative has already yielded some success, with reports indicating the recovery of firearms and the arrest of several suspects.

The drones, operating at high altitudes, are being deployed to monitor combatants engaged in hostile activities within the conflict zone.

Once potential perpetrators are identified through aerial surveillance, security forces act swiftly to apprehend them.

On Wednesday, December 18, intense gunfire erupted at approximately 6am, with heavy shooting reported in the Bawku-Gingande and Kpalore areas.

Although the clash heightened tensions in the region, no casualties have been confirmed from the latest incident.

The deployment of drones comes in response to a recent surge in violent attacks, which have caused significant loss of life in Bawku. On 16th December, two separate incidents resulted in the deaths of Moro Aziz and another individual identified as Kasim.

Aziz, a mentally ill man from Gozesi, was tragically killed near the Bawku cemetery after wandering into the area. Kasim was fatally shot in Daduri while attempting to relocate to another location.

These killings have further exacerbated the precarious security situation in Bawku, bringing the total number of fatalities to 35 since the resurgence of violence in late October 2024.

The conflict, which has been marked by sporadic attacks and retaliations, has left the community on edge and prompted intensified security measures.

Authorities have stressed their commitment to restoring peace and order in the area. The use of drones has been highlighted as a critical step in enhancing surveillance and ensuring the safety of residents.

While the region remains tense, security agencies are hopeful that the deployment of advanced technology will contribute significantly to addressing the ongoing crisis.
