Coach Kwesi Appiah has successfully led Sudan to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), attaining a remarkable qualifying campaign under challenging circumstances.

Despite the political instability in Sudan that forced all their matches to be played away from home, Appiah’s side secured eight points to book their place in the tournament.

Appiah’s Sudan delivered a pivotal performance in October, beating his former team, Ghana, 2-0. That result proved crucial, putting them in a strong position to qualify. On Monday, Sudan sealed their AFCON spot with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Angola in their final Group F match.

This achievement echoes the success of the late Sir Jones Attuquayefio, who famously guided Benin to the 2004 AFCON while Ghana failed to qualify. Until this year, that was the last time Ghana missed out on Africa’s premier football tournament.

While Sudan celebrates their achievement, Ghana’s campaign ended in disappointment. The Black Stars finished bottom of the group with no wins, scoring just three goals in six games—a stark contrast to Appiah’s triumph.
