The Ghana Police Service has launched a full-scale investigation into the death of Ransford Owusu, a 16-year-old footballer with Siano Soccer Academy in Accra, following allegations that he was sexually assaulted by his coach before his death.

The case, which involves suspected sexual abuse, possible homicide, and alleged negligence, has been transferred to the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra, underscoring the seriousness of the matter.

According to a statement issued on November 8 by the Director-General of Public Affairs, DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the investigation began after the victim’s mother, Ama Asantewaa, lodged a complaint at the Amasaman Police Station. She alleged that her son had confided in her that his coach, Anyass Ibrahim, had sexually abused him before he fell critically ill.

Police confirmed that the suspect was arrested on November 4, 2025, interrogated, and granted bail under strict conditions, including mandatory reporting to the CID Headquarters while investigations continue.

Investigators have since obtained medical documents from the victim’s mother indicating that Ransford was treated for liver and kidney-related complications at both the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Maternal and Child Health Hospital, both in Kumasi, prior to his death on February 28, 2025.

The Police Service emphasized that securing the victim’s complete medical and autopsy reports is essential to determining the actual cause of death and any potential link to the alleged abuse. After initial requests for the records were declined, the police secured a court order compelling both hospitals to release all relevant documents to aid the ongoing investigation.

The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and his family, stating that the case remains under active investigation at the CID Headquarters.
