The Dunkwahene, Okoforobour Obeng Nuako III, of the Upper Denkyira East Municipality in the Central Region, has called on drivers to make passenger safety their top priority and adhere strictly to traffic regulations as the harmattan season sets in.
Speaking during the 8th Akwasidae celebration at Obeng Nuako Ahenfie in Dunkwa-on-Offin, the traditional leader cautioned that harmattan mornings are often marked by thick dust and poor visibility, conditions that heighten the risk of road accidents.
He advised motorists to drive with extra care, maintain moderate speeds, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition to withstand the harsh weather. “Drivers must recognize that passenger safety is a sacred duty. Reckless driving during harmattan puts lives at great risk,” he warned.
Okoforobour Obeng Nuako III also urged transport unions to step up road safety education, especially for commercial drivers who operate in the early hours of the day. He emphasized the need to use headlights, keep safe following distances, and avoid driving while tired.
Addressing the poor state of major roads including the Dunkwa–Obuasi, Dunkwa–Ayanfuri, and Dunkwa–Twifo Praso routes, he appealed to the government to prioritize their rehabilitation. He noted that bad roads not only increase the likelihood of accidents but also expose travelers to highway robberies.
The Dunkwahene further called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways to take urgent action to improve these key routes, stressing that safer roads would help protect lives and boost local economic activities.
