The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed the deaths of five people in a fatal road accident at Asikuma Junction in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.

According to the GNFS, a total of nine people were involved in the crash, which occurred between a grey Toyota Noah (GX 422-25) and a tipper truck (GT 725-19).

Four survivors, including a child, were rescued and transported to the Peki Government Hospital by the National Ambulance Service, while the remaining five victims were found unresponsive and later handed over to the police.

In a statement, GNFS Volta Regional PRO, ADO I Hope Bedzra, said the Peki Fire Station received a distress call about the incident on November 1, prompting the immediate dispatch of a rescue team led by AstnO Fred Aganu and accompanied by the Acting District Fire Officer, ADO I Godwin Gbedemah.

The GNFS commended the swift collaboration between its personnel, the National Ambulance Service, and the police, which ensured a coordinated rescue and recovery operation.

Meanwhile, recent data from the National Road Safety Authority (NSRA), compiled with the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), shows that Ghana recorded 7,289 road crashes and 1,504 deaths between January and June 2025.

During the same period, 12,354 vehicles were involved in various accidents, leaving 8,300 people injured and 1,301 pedestrians knocked down nationwide.

The NSRA highlighted that, on average, Ghana loses 8 lives daily to road crashes, records 40 accidents each day, and sees 46 people injured and 69 vehicles or motorcycles involved in crashes every 24 hours.

The authority has once again called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and enhanced public education to curb the alarming rise in road accidents across the country.
