Firefighters in the Ahafo Region have contained a blaze that swept through a dormitory at the Kwapong Nursing and Midwifery Training College on Friday morning, preventing what could have been a major disaster.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Kukuom Fire Station received a distress call around 7:12 a.m. and arrived at the scene within 20 minutes. Reinforcements from the Goaso Fire Station soon joined the operation, and the team brought the fire under control by 8:45 a.m., completely extinguishing it by 10:26 a.m.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire began in one of the rooms on the first floor of a one-storey dormitory block before spreading to six adjoining rooms. The blaze destroyed the roof, ceiling, beds, books, and other personal items belonging to students. Two fire extinguishers on the affected floor also exploded during the incident.

No injuries or casualties were reported.

Fire officials say investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the blaze. They commended the swift response of the Kukuom and Goaso fire crews for preventing the flames from spreading to other parts of the campus.

The incident has sparked renewed calls for improved fire safety systems and regular inspections in schools and training institutions across the region.
