Aburaso, a community along the Bechem–Kumasi Highway, was thrown into mourning on Tuesday afternoon, October 28, after a heavy-duty truck loaded with lumber lost control and ran over three pupils, killing one on the spot.
Information gathered by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicates that the deceased, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was returning home from school with two other pupils when the incident occurred around 2:00 p.m.
The two surviving pupils sustained critical injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
An eyewitness, Mr. Evans Owusu, told the GNA in a telephone interview that the driver of the truck, with registration number GE 9901-11, lost control of the vehicle, causing the lumber to fall from the bucket and trap the children.
According to him, some residents quickly mobilized to rescue the victims but found that one of the pupils had already died.
Mr. Owusu added that the accident left the Aburaso section of the Bechem–Kumasi Highway blocked, resulting in heavy traffic as vehicles from both directions were unable to move.
He said several passengers were stranded following the incident, while the truck driver and his mate escaped unhurt and fled the scene.
