The Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service has suspended the heads of three technical institutes after investigations confirmed that they had been charging students unauthorized fees.
The affected schools are Agona Swedru Technical Institute in the Central Region, Sunyani Technical Institute in the Bono Region, and Madina Technical Institute in the Greater Accra Region.
In a statement, the TVET Service said the heads were implicated in the collection of several unapproved charges, including admission fees, boarding protocol payments, levies for switching residential status, charges for practical materials, bed sheets, and PTA dues.
Management stressed that such practices violate the government’s Free TVET Policy, which guarantees free access to technical and vocational education for eligible students. It added that the unlawful collections undermine transparency and fairness in the admission process.
To ensure accountability, investigative committees will be set up to conduct full inquiries into the matter, with their findings expected to guide additional disciplinary action.
Meanwhile, the three heads have been placed on a 30-day administrative leave. Their roles will be temporarily taken over by the respective Regional Directors:
- Madam Hannah Asamoah – Central Region, overseeing Agona Swedru Technical Institute
- Mr. Gabriel Gyamfi – Bono Region, overseeing Sunyani Technical Institute
- Engr. Juliana Nkrumah – Greater Accra Region, overseeing Madina Technical Institute
The TVET Service reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on corruption and misconduct.
“Management remains committed to upholding accountability, transparency, and fairness in the administration of TVET institutions nationwide,” the statement said.
It assured parents and students that the integrity of the admissions process will be protected and that standards of professionalism will be maintained.
