The Government of Ghana has declared a three-day national mourning period following the passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. President John Dramani Mahama announced the directive on Friday, indicating that the mourning will be observed from Friday, October 24 to Sunday, October 26, 2025.

As part of the observance, all national flags are to be flown at half-mast across public institutions, government establishments, and Ghana’s diplomatic missions worldwide.

“This is in honor of her memory and in recognition of her distinguished service to the nation,” the statement noted.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who served as First Lady from 1981 to 2001, was renowned for her pioneering advocacy in women’s empowerment, child welfare, and social development, particularly through the 31st December Women’s Movement. Her work played a significant role in influencing policies that advanced women’s rights and economic participation during a transformative era in Ghana’s democratic evolution.

The statement described her as a committed public servant whose contributions “remain deeply woven into the country’s social progress,” particularly in the upliftment of women and vulnerable communities.

The government extended condolences to the Rawlings family, especially her children, as well as members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and all who mourn her passing.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course, following consultations between the family and the state.
