During the 57th Congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who serves as the university’s chancellor has appealed to Ghanaian graduates not to pursue opportunities abroad for what might seem like “greener pastures.”

In his address, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II shared insights from his own experience living abroad, emphasizing that graduates often find themselves relegated to menial jobs despite their qualifications.

“With all due respect, on this topic I have lived abroad before, we worked in restaurants and all those things, even though we had gone to the tertiary university here before we went there. So, the people here are much better than living abroad, and we have to be honest with ourselves,” he remarked to applause from his audience.

Drawing attention to the challenges faced by Ghanaian graduate students abroad, he highlighted that, in many cases, they end up with cleaning jobs rather than positions that align with their qualifications.

“People qualified are not getting the work they want to do because they are take to hospital to clean whiles you are here, we accord you with all the respect and dignity as a lecturer, as a professor, and everything. So please, let us stay here and work,” the Asantehene urged, emphasizing that Ghana provides an environment where graduates are valued and respected for their qualifications.
