Former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini, has cautioned sitting legislators to be mindful of their conduct, warning that no Member of Parliament is beyond accountability and that every action taken in the House carries consequences.

His remarks follow Speaker Alban Bagbin’s referral of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to the Privileges Committee for alleged contempt of Parliament. The referral was prompted by a petition from Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga after Afenyo-Markin challenged an attempt to remove him from Ghana’s ECOWAS delegation.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Thursday, November 27, Fuseini urged MPs to take parliamentary rules seriously and familiarize themselves with the Standing Orders to avoid conduct that could trigger sanctions.

“As a Member of Parliament, the first thing you should acquaint yourself with is your conduct — what conduct could be the subject of a referral to the Privileges Committee. It doesn’t matter whether you are the Majority Leader or the Minority Leader; what is important is whether the conduct exhibited infringes any provision of the Standing Orders,” he said.

Fuseini further warned that Afenyo-Markin could face expulsion if the committee finds him in breach of the rules, stressing that no MP enjoys immunity from disciplinary action.

“No leader, whether from the Majority or the Minority, is immune from expulsion in Parliament if you read Article 97 carefully,” he added.

His comments add another layer of tension to an already heated parliamentary environment as MPs await the committee’s next steps.
